I usually dig a little deeper than the root ball but always make sure that when planting that the top edge of the root ball is at or slightly above ground level to allow for settling. A 3 gallon container is typically 10 inches wide so that would be at least a 20-inch wide hole, but wider is better. Regarding the size to dig the planting hole, we usually suggest at least twice as wide as the container/root ball, the wider the better. Pardon my lack of computer skills! No matter what I did, I could not get back on to give you a proper review to let you know. That being said, spent flowers can be removed to encourage a possible second flush of flowers.
